Hibernians stage comeback to edge past Naxxar Lions

Hibernians rallied from a goal down to secure their first three points of the season with a 2-1 victory over Naxxar Lions. Despite a strong first-half performance from the Lions, who took the lead through a penalty, it was another spot-kick that allowed the Paolites to equalize. Hibernians then improved significantly in the second half, overturning the scoreline in their favor. Despite Naxxar’s efforts to find a late equalizer, their attempts were ultimately in vain.

Both teams featured several debutants in their line-ups. Naxxar coach George Vella introduced Pedro Vitor, Matheus Taumaturgo, Luan Sergio, Caxambu, and Kemmu Degran Jackson from the start, with Gustavo Barbosa coming on as a substitute. Hibernians coach Branko Nisevic handed starts to Dexter Xuereb, Pedrao, Khevin Fraga, and Federico Falcone.

Naxxar dominated the early stages and broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when they were awarded a penalty, confidently converted by Caxambu. They nearly doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark when Taumaturgo’s shot from the edge of the area narrowly missed the target.

Hibernians, however, drew level in the 34th minute after being awarded a penalty of their own. Pedro Vitor’s challenge on Bjorn Kristinsen inside the box led to the spot-kick, which Alex Bruno calmly slotted home. Naxxar had a chance to regain the lead four minutes later, but Pedro Vitor’s effort from a Caxambu corner flew over the bar. The Lions also had a late penalty appeal before the break, claiming a handball in the box, but it was waved away.

In the second half, Hibernians came out stronger and took the lead in the 52nd minute. Alex Bruno delivered a cross from the left, allowing Jurgen Degabriele to tap the ball past goalkeeper Matthias Debono. Naxxar continued to press, with Caxambu’s corner on 74 minutes testing Hibernians’ keeper Hugo Sacco, but he managed to block it.

In the closing stages, Naxxar intensified their search for an equalizer, but Hibernians’ defense remained resolute, securing a hard-fought victory.
