Hamrun Spartans secure second Closing Round victory with win over Hibernians

Hamrun Spartans made it two wins from two in the Closing Round, defeating Hibernians 2-1 in a closely contested match at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. The Malta champions capitalized on defensive errors from their opponents to secure another crucial victory in their bid for a Top 6 finish.

The Spartans struck early, taking the lead after 16 minutes. High pressing from Hamrun forced Jurgen Degabriele into an errant backpass, which Joseph Mbong intercepted before setting up Raphael Lopes Silva to fire past goalkeeper Hugo Sacco. Despite TV replays suggesting an offside, the goal was allowed to stand.

Hibernians, shaken by the early setback, struggled to create significant chances against a well-organized Spartans defense. Their efforts were largely restricted to speculative attempts, while Hamrun continued to threaten on the break. Talison’s low drive was saved by Sacco, while debutant Ilias Apostolos’s cross found Federico Falcone, who headed wide. Ryan Camenzuli came closest for Hibernians in the first half with a powerful long-range effort that narrowly missed the target. Sacco produced two key saves late in the half, denying Talison’s free-kick and Lopes Silva’s header.

Hamrun doubled their lead early in the second half when Talison was brought down by Sacco in the penalty area. Luke Montebello stepped up and confidently converted from the spot. Despite this setback, Hibernians fought back and reduced the deficit on 65 minutes when Degabriele’s cross found Falcone, who finished from close range.

The match remained tense, with Hamrun nearly restoring their two-goal cushion as Lopes Silva’s effort struck the upright. Hibernians pushed for an equalizer, but Spartans goalkeeper Henry Bonello made a crucial late save to deny Pedro Nunes Silva’s thunderous strike, ensuring Hamrun held on for the win.
