We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of our former player Jimmy Mizzi, who passed away overnight.
Jimmy Mizzi, born on 18th September, 1939, was one of the best forwards at Hibernians FC.
In 1961, Hibs won the first ever Premier League championship. After a very tight title race with Valletta, a head to head match was played on 28th May. The Paolites won 2-1 with Jimmy scoring both goals and led the way for our team to secure the first-ever Premier League title.
In season 1961-62, Hibernians became winners of the Schembri Shield, the Cassar Cup and the FA Trophy. Mizzi was also an asset to this squad as he scored the winning goal in the Cassar Cup Final against Sliema Wanderers. He also forced Valletta’s Irish goalkeeper Tommy Taylor to make an own goal after a powerful strike at the FA Trophy final.
Jimmy Mizzi was also part of the team who played Atletico Madrid on 7th November, 1962 in a match from the Cup Winners Cup at the Empire Stadium. The match finished 0-1 for the Spanish giants.
A part of our history which will surely never be forgotten.
